SUBJECT:
AMERICAN
HISTORY
OVERVIEW/PROJECT
DESCRIPTION:
Exploration of the
three
digital collections listed below:
- The
Online Archive of California (OAC)
http://www.oac.cdlib.org/
is a statewide digital resource that integrates into a single,
searchable
database, finding aids to and digital facsimiles of the contents of
primary
resource collections throughout California.
Finding aids are the
registers,
guides, and inventories that describe in detail the contents of primary
resource collections, which may include materials such as letters,
diaries,
manuscripts, legal and financial records, photographs and other
pictorial
items, maps, architectural and engineering records, artwork, scientific
logbooks, electronic records, sound recordings, oral histories,
artifacts
and ephemera.
Finding aids are written by
the
repositories which administer the collections. Access to finding aids,
such as those within the OAC, is essential for verifying and
understanding
a collection's contents, for identifying the repository which
administers
the collection, and for determining whether the collection is likely to
satisfy research needs.
- Overview
http://www.cdlib.org/guides/oac/#overview
- Japanese
American Relocation Digital Archives (JARDA)
http://jarda.cdlib.org/
JARDA is a digital "thematic collection"
within the CDL's OAC documenting the experience of Japanese Americans
in
World War II internment camps. Curators from eight participating OAC
members
selected a broad range of primary sources to be including photographs,
documents, manuscripts, paintings, drawings, letters, and oral
histories.
Over 10,000 digital images have been created complimented by 20,000
pages
of electronic transcriptions of document and oral histories
- Museum
Online Archive of California (MOAC)
http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/moac/
MOAC is creating a prototype "virtual
museum archive" that integrates standardized "finding aids" for museum
and library special collections into a single source, thus providing
access
to collections held by archives, museums, and libraries throughout the
state of California.
