      • Showed various search directories and engines and explained their strengths. Yahoo has an extensive list of newspaper websites. DMOZ is Shelley’s favorite and its directory is two times larger than Yahoo; no advertisements. About.com has experts to answer questions. Sciences, hobbies. Lot of pop ups. Google has spell check, news alert and good images. Check out “service & tools”. Alta Vista does translations. Alltheweb- use if not sure a website exists; has video clips. In advanced search, you can limit searching to domain, i.e., .gov, .edu. ~indicates a personal webpage. Be careful. Vivisimo presents a clustered search.

  • Urban Legends Reference Page -- http://www.snopes.com. This site can be used to check out hoaxes, especially about virus messages.
  • Information Literacy Presentation by Maggie Barnes and Alex Ito, Santa Ana Unified (http://www.sausd.k12.ca.us). This powerpoint presentation presented links for each step in the Big 6.
